WESTERN SUBURBS’ WATER PROJECT GREAT NEWS FOR REGION

Developers of the new St Clair residential project at Cheltenham have applauded this week’s announcement of Federal and State funds towards a range of stormwater projects, including a major commitment to Adelaide's western suburbs.

St Clair joint venture partners AVJennings and Urban Pacific said the $20 million committed to Stage one of the Water Proofing the West project would be of huge benefit to current residents, as well as the new community of St Clair.

"This latest announcement by the Federal and State Governments means the western suburbs will benefit from improved stormwater management and recycled water, and it will be fantastic for residents within the new St Clair project, especially given the announcement earlier this year of the wetlands and aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) system that will be constructed in St Clair,” AVJennings spokesperson Brian Virgo said.

“The recycled water will be used on the new ovals, parks and gardens being planned for St Clair; creating a beautiful green place for all to enjoy year round, which is another bonus for the community.”

Mr Virgo said St Clair’s wetlands and ASR scheme would have the capacity to treat, store, recover and re-use approximately 1.2 gigalitres of stormwater per year.

It would also allow new homes within St Clair to be connected to a recycled water system to use the harvested stormwater for non-potable purposes, such as watering gardens and flushing toilets.

“St Clair has already set new benchmarks for environmental residential development with a guarantee of 35 per cent open space to be used for parks, reserves and wetlands,” Mr Virgo said.

“This week’s announcement by the Federal and State Governments committing funding for the Waterproofing the West - Stage 1 stormwater project takes this yet another step further, and we believe environmentally conscious home buyers will see this as a significant attraction.”

The master plan for St Clair was unveiled in August, with the development set to be Adelaide’s first large-scale, inner-metropolitan “water-wise” residential community.  The overall site will provide more than 22 hectares dedicated to open space and wetlands, with the potential to deliver significant regional stormwater management and recycling benefits.

Features of St Clair include:

- 35 per cent open space linked by a network of pedestrian and cycle paths;
- Wetlands, including leading water sensitive urban design initiatives to harvest and re-use stormwater for long term sustainability;
- Approximately 1,200 new homes providing a diversity of housing types to appeal to a wide range of people and households; and
- Retail, recreational and community facilities.
